An opportunity for driver trainers to undertake high quality CPD training at a choice of venues - across Great Britain - in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a highly experienced trainer at a modest cost

The course is classroom based and fulfils the DSA target of one days CPD training per year. All course materials are provided and the course will cover a variety of subjects including teaching techniques, the DL25 the GDE matrix and some ideas on promoting and marketing your business.

  • The cost of the CPD day for MSA members who book early is £65. Full price is £85 including tea, coffee and biscuits on arrival, morning coffee, a two course lunch and afternoon tea. Please note: Advance booking is required for all these events there will be no admission on the day for anyone who has not booked.

Course timings

  • Registration tea and coffee available from 9:00 course starts at 9:30, there will be a number of refreshment/comfort breaks throughout the day with lunch at about 12:30, if you have any special dietary needs please let us know when you book. The course will conclude at 16:30.

Course outline

  • Pre-course paperwork will be sent to you and you will be asked to answer a confidential questionnaire about you and your business. Details of your answers will not be passed to other members of the course and the questionnaires will be returned to you at the end of the day. The questionnaire should take no more than thirty minutes to complete.
  • All course participants will receive a Course Attendance Certificate and a CPD portfolio in which to store details of the CPD they undertake.
  • The course will use a number of different teaching/learning strategies with opportunities for participants to get involved. However, no one will be forced to take part if they do not want to.
  • All course materials are provided and the modular course will cover a variety of subjects including modules on recording and reporting your CPD, teaching techniques including coaching, check test preparation, driving licences and the DL25, the GDE matrix, some ideas on promoting and marketing your business and on selling lessons in the car.

Course participation

  • Who should attend this course? If you are an ADI who has made it their business to keep up-to-date by attending MSA and other meetings, seminars and conferences then this course is not for you, you will probably have knowledge of all the subjects being covered. If on the other hand you have kept yourself pretty much to yourself since you qualified and would like to dip your toe into continuing professional development training then this is the event for you.

Course tutor

  • The tutor on this CPD course will be MSA general manager John Lepine. John is the MSA’s senior executive officer responsible to the board of management for the day-to-day running of the organisation. His principal areas of responsibility are policy and communications. He is also executive editor of Newslink, the MSA’s monthly trade paper.
  • He has just celebrated 25 years working for the MSA and has unparalleled and wide ranging experience of the driver training industry, including being chairman of the working party investigating the setting up of a register of driving instructor training establishments. He was then a member of the Directory of Approved Driving Instructor Training Establishments (ADITE) Management Committee and a member of the Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers Management Committee (ORDIT) for five years.
  • He chaired the N/SVQ. Driving Instruction Management Group and is a member of the Pass Plus Board. He is also a member of the DfT Advisory Group on Driver Training and Testing and represents driver trainers on the Road Safety Ministers Advisory Panel.
  • In 2000 he was a member of the work-related road safety task group which produced what has become known as the Dykes report and is the foundation document for modern fleet training. John is a member of GoSkills (the sector skills council for driver trainers) stakeholder board and chairs the GoSkills driving trainer industry group. He currently sits on the DSA CPD Steering Group & Working Party.
  • As part of his duties, he has represented the MSA at the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the European Secure Vehicle Alliance (ESVA) and the European Driving Schools Association (EFA)
  • He has also, on a number of occasions, given expert evidence to the Parliamentary Select Committee for Transport.
  • He is respected throughout the industry and has been awarded fellowship of the Institute of Association Management, the Institute of Master Tutors of Driving and the Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers. He has been a member of the Register of Approved Driving Instructors since 1977 and is a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. In 1991 he was awarded the MBE for his services to road safety.
  • John was educated at the Geoffrey Chaucer School in Canterbury and studied business at Canterbury College. Prior to working in driver training, John was involved in sales and marketing in a number of different businesses, including under chassis spares for large vehicles, frozen foods and building materials.

Calling local groups

  • If your local group association or driving school would like to run an MSA CPD training day please contact MSA head office. We will tailor a training seminar to your requirements. You organise the event venue refreshments etc. The MSA will provide a trainer and all the course materials required for a fixed sum of £400 regardless of the number of people attending the event. Post course you will need to complete your CPD portfolio and record of achievement. There will also be a number of suggestions for further home study that you may wish to pursue.
