B&Q say no to learners in their car parks21-03-2017
"We do not allow driving schools to use our car parks; this is a blanket and steadfast ban for all schools. I can confirm that injunctive action will be taken if our lack of consent continues to be violated”

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED STAY CLEAR OF B&Q CAR PARKS

MSA GB has recently had an exchange of correspondence with B&Q both with their Property Management Surveyor and with their Chief Executive.

B&Q are concerned about driving school cars using their car parks for lessons without their consent.  They state that:

“Driving instructors giving lessons in B&Q car parks are trespassers. In some car parks, large sections of the car park are taken out of use for B&Q customers on account of the numerous driving lessons taking place. In some instances, for motorcycle lessons, sections have even been coned off. All of this is without B&Q’s consent and when the driving instructors have been approached by B&Q staff the driving instructors have been dismissive and even at times abusive.”

MSA GB General Manager John Lepine wrote to the company:

“I fully appreciate that B&Q car parks are principally for your customers and I certainly do not condone anyone placing cones in areas of your car park without permission that is clearly unacceptable as is any abusive behaviour towards your staff.

“We are very keen to promote safe driving if people are well versed in parking then it will be for the greater good for all including your customers.

“I feel sure most learners and their instructors will not want to practice in very busy car parks where they may annoy others. As I am sure you are aware sometimes of the day your car parks are very quiet and driver trainers and their learners will usually find the quiet corners and not get in the way of shoppers.

“I am certain that the road safety community would be happy to work with you to promote good practice and I would appeal to you to reconsider this decision and allow instructors to use your car parks, this would help to improve road safety and introduce better trained drivers to your stores.

“I very much hope we can work together in the promotion of road safety and you will allow learner drivers to practice their parking skills in your car parks.”

It seems this is not to be the case the B&Q Chief Executives Office replied as follows:

“We do not authorise nor condone any driving schools to use our car parks and anyone seen doing so will politely be asked to leave the premises as this is trespassing.

“Quite a few incidents have been reported, including, but not limited to:

  • A gas cage has been hit; these contain pressured Calor Gas containers and the effect of an impact could be extremely serious and potentially deadly
  • Members of staff's cars have been scratched by learners practicing manoeuvres
  • Several customers have complained about us "allowing" the use of our car parks for this purpose
  • Areas of car parks coned off so B&Q customers are unable to park in those sections
  • Store staff getting abused when asking instructors to leave - this is completely unacceptable

“We reiterate our stance that we do not allow driving schools to use our car parks; this is a blanket and steadfast ban for all schools.  I can also confirm that injunctive action will be taken if our lack of consent continues to be violated.

“I appreciate this is not the reply you were hoping for, but I trust this clarifies our position on this matter.”
